The Burden of Caring

“If equal affection cannot be, then let the more loving one be me.” -W.H. Auden

I know that such words are beautiful; this is certain. But I’m not sure of much else. Is it a good thing to feel more for your lover than they do for you? Is devastating pain not the natural conclusion to such a state? And yet, it is not the more righteous state of being, to pour one’s self into a lover, fearlessly and completely? Is this not the very definition of love?
