The Bliss of Ignorance

The Bliss of Ignorance

There is nothing more beautiful than an infant’s smile. When I was younger, I used to think that this was because babies are cute and thus their smiles, whether they contain teeth or not, are invariably cute as well. As I got older I realized that this was only partly true. Yes, babies are cute, but they are also ignorant of the cruelty, ugliness, pain and deceit in the world. Their smiles are not the by-product of stolen moments of laughter or pleasure in an existence that is mundane at best and overwhelmingly bleak at worst. They do not smile with fear or hypocrisy in their hearts. The smiles of an infant are never “in spite of” life but a celebration of a life that, in their ignorance, holds nothing but the purest joy.
