Maniac Magee

Maniac Magee

For almost two decades now, one of my favourite books has been “Maniac Magee”. “Maniac Magee” is the story of a young orphan whom, when sent to live with his repressed aunt and uncle (who loathe one another but are too religious to get a divorce), runs away. And he never stops running. He runs to another town, he runs into the lives of a kind Black family who takes him in. He runs so fast and so far before he finally figures out that when a person finally finds what they’ve been looking for, they should stop running.

As a person who wanted to run away so often a s a child and even as an adult, this short but poignant story of trying to find both freedom and family moved me and it’s never stopped running through my mind.
