As much as I love films, one of my least favourite movie genres is the romantic comedy, mostly because they try to be both funny and romantic and fail very hard to be either. There are a few exceptions, though, and “She’s Out of My League” is one of them. Starring Alice Eve (a British actress whom I’ve loved since her role as Alice in the film “Starter for 10) and Jay Baruchel of “Knocked Up!” fame, this film the romance of Molly (a gorgeous, funny businesswoman) and Kirk (an airport employee on the low side of “average”).
A movie that could have easily been ruined by a terrible script and horrendous acting shines with well-placed punch-lines, tons of inside pop-culture references and stellar, believable acting from everyone involved. Besides hilarious one-liners, this film tastes a refreshingly honest approach at female and male friendships, the ways in which family can sabotage a relationship, and what a great impact honesty and self-esteem can have on the way that we relate to others.
