I wanted you, although I knew better that to do so.
I relied on you, when I’ve always been alone.
I opened up to you, even when I was afraid to.
I trusted, when trust is so treacherous.
I gave you the love that I always wanted for myself
But which never materialized.
“People always disappoint you.”
Turns out, you were right.
“Don’t move, don’t breath. Don’t change, don’t leave. Promise me you’ll always be this kind, this sweet, this good to me… Say that you’ll stay forever this way.”
It is the greatest promise that we can ask someone to make, the promise to never change. As human beings, we are constantly evolving, changing minutely with each day. To ask another to never, ever change is synonymous with asking them to never grow, evolve, flourish. Love makes us selfishly want to keep our lovers exactly as they are. Reason and trust allow for growth, even if it means that they will grow apart from us.
